Rule number one in my book is to keep the arrangement at a reasonable size and height. To check height, put your elbow on the table and make a fist. A little weed whacking is in order if your arrangement exceeds this height. Making a tall full arrangement in the middle of your table might be dramatic for cocktail hour -before your guests are seated- but then you run the risk of your guests bobbing and weaving their way through dinner trying to communicate across the way..
A quick way to solve this problem is to use a runner in the middle of the table. If you have a long low narrow bread tray(optional), place that on top to hold your decorations. Intersperse gourds and small pumpkins onto the tray along with strings of berries for color. Then add a few pillar candles, and with very little effort you are done.
